Public policies to reduce violence in schools

In light of recent episodes of violence in schools in Brazil, it is increasingly necessary to create public policies aimed at reducing the incidence of these violent attacks in schools. In this sense, Joana Monteiro recalls that since 2019 the Foundation has investigated projects that could prevent this type of violence.

“This type of approach holds great promise for reducing violent behavior in schools. The model is currently being tested in São Paulo, but in the future it could be adapted to other school systems in different regions of the country,” said Joana Monteiro.

She also emphasizes that society needs to have public policies that help young people navigate this complicated period of adolescence. Implementation in schools
Monteiro states that the prospect is to reach more than 1,200 students in the next cycle of the program, in addition, monitoring activities will become a fundamental part from now on.

Rafael Aquino, researcher at FGV and coordinator of the first phase of the project, explains that the first schools selected to receive the program were indicated by the Support and Monitoring Center for Learning (NAAPA), of the São Paulo Department of Education.

“NAAPA already serves any student who is vulnerable to learning and who is exposed to different types of violence. The selection and awareness of the teaching units was made based on a mapping of the schools and their students by NAAPA, which was responsible for mediating this contact between FGV and the schools,” said Aquino.
