Google's algorithm update may impact the performance of finance and lifestyle sites. Learn more about the topic and prevent your site from losing rankings!

Whenever Google releases an algorithm update, the digital world goes into a panic trying to understand what changed, who was (or will be) affected, and the extent of the changes.

On August 1, 2018, it happened more than once. Google used one of its Twitter accounts to announce a broad update to its search algorithm.

Immediately, sites in the YMYL (Your Money or Your Life) category began to see major changes in their search engine rankings, some positively and others not so much.

With the update – already informally dubbed by some as “Medical Update” due to the strong impact on health, nutrition and wellness sites – several questions arise.

What are YMYL pages?
First of all, it's important to understand what the acronym YMYL stands for to know whether rcs data your site is at high risk of being affected or not.

To do this, we are going to start by using Google's own definition, which says:

“Some types of pages can impact users’ future happiness, health, financial stability or safety. We call these pages “Your Money or Your Life,” or YMYL.”

Then, Google itself gives some examples of pages considered YMYL:

Shopping or financial transactions: pages that allow you to make purchases, payments or transfers (such as e-commerce pages and online banks)
Financial information: pages with information on investments, taxes, retirement plans, financing, partnerships, insurance and other financial services;
Medical information: pages with information on health, medications, mental health, nutrition, medical treatments and related topics;
Legal Information: pages with legal advice and information on issues such as divorce, child custody, obtaining citizenship, etc.
