The pandemic has completely changed the world of work, from retail to digital commerce, marking a boom in the proliferation of e-commerce and digital stores. Salesforce presented its report on retail trends during the second quarter: the Salesforce Q2 Shopping Index reveals retail trends for April, May, and June; the data was collected through the Commerce Cloud platform .
Digital revenue continues to grow
Digital revenue in the second quarter grew 71% year-over-year, the buy bulk sms service largest increase since the Shopping Index launched seven years ago. Traffic, conversions, and spending also saw historic year-over-year increases.
The “Buy online, pick up in store” option is a huge advantage for retailers
Sites offering buy online and pick up in store options saw a surge in digital revenue in the second quarter compared to the same period in 2019. In contrast, brick-and-mortar sites that did not offer pickup saw minimal growth.
The trend changes, the conversion rate also increases
Generally, when traffic increases (as happens during the end-of-year shopping season), conversion rates decrease, and the second quarter bucked this trend. With retailers experiencing an increase in digital traffic compared to the second quarter of 2019, conversion rates increased compared to the second quarter of the previous year.
Purchases of essential goods made through digital channels continue to rise
Consumers continue to increasingly turn to digital channels. Since the second quarter of 2019, global digital spending on essentials (which include food, personal care items, and other items commonly found in grocery stores) has increased significantly, compared to an average increase in spending on non-essentials.
