Tenancy is one of the oldest forms of land and property use. Similar concepts existed in ancient Rome, where people could use land or other resources for a fee or consideration. Over the course of history, tenancy has evolved and taken on various forms to suit the respective social and economic circumstances.

In the Middle Ages, renting was widespread, especially in rural areas, where betting email list peasants used land from feudal lords to cultivate their fields. The peasants were given the right to work the land and harvest crops, but in return they had to pay tribute to the lord in kind or money. This tribute was called rent.

In modern times, too, leases have established themselves as an important means of regulating access to resources, be it agricultural land, forests or even fishing rights. The legal arrangements have become increasingly formal and recorded in writing.
