Real case: Toyota - performance and crisis communication
Let’s take a concrete case to better understand what crisis management is through performance management.

In the late 2000s, Toyota was a well-known, popular and growing brand. But a single accident involving one of its high-end models (a Lexus ES350) put the Japanese brand in trouble in November 2009. Four people were killed in California after the driver lost control of the vehicle. The Lexus crashed into a wall and caught fire, leaving no chance for the passengers. The braking system and the floor mat were blamed.

The company then neglected management performance and did not react immediately, thus coming close to disaster. The brand was singled out and numerous accidents were reported, throughout the world, undoubtedly due to manufacturing defects. Toyota had to recall more than 16 million cars. This major crisis saw the brand forced to react. At first, Toyota remained silent. But faced with the growing number of critics, the brand spoke out more than 6 months after the accident.
