A Paris court has ordered online auction and sales site eBay to pay 80,000 euros to the Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton group for allowing the sale of counterfeit products bearing the group's brands. For each instance of the sale of a counterfeit product, eBay will have to pay a fine of 1,000 euros, the court ruled.
LVMH accused eBay of selling counterfeit products 99 acres data from some of its brands, including Christian Dior, Kenzo, Givenchy and Guerlain, to its customers. LVMH initially claimed damages of four million euros.
Google is also facing off against luxury group LVMH in the European Court. The court is due to decide on two lawsuits in which LVMH accuses Google of allowing its system to be used to sell counterfeit Louis Vuitton handbags.
Google and eBay argue that it is not possible to keep track of every single trademarked item. But LVMH believes that internet companies need to go further to protect brands.
