Konstantin Kolesov, Head of Strategic Development of Data Transfer at PJSC VimpelCom (trade mark - Beeline), spoke about this at the MSK-IX Peering Forum. He recalled that CDN (Content Delivery Network) is needed for high-quality content delivery.
(GGC). Any operator, even with jamaica whatsapp number database a small traffic consumption, could contact Google and get a caching server. They would bring a server, and YouTube content would be distributed not from Europe or Moscow, but directly in the regions, locally. This is good for everyone - users, operators, services. But Google has not supplied servers for a year, and traffic continues to grow. Accordingly, sooner or later, GGC servers will cease to exist - either due to natural wear and tear, or their capacity will not be enough to provide the required volume. This will affect the quality, especially on shorts (short videos). Small videos should load quickly and immediately in good quality. Therefore, at first, the quality of YouTube in the regions will "float", then the traffic will begin to shift to Moscow and St. Petersburg, loading the backbone networks more and more. When the capacity in the capitals runs out, we expect traffic in international directions. Here, domestic services will have a chance - thanks to the deterioration in quality of the main competitor. Apparently, in 2024 we should expect a greater number of user services on CDN,” says Konstantin Kolesov.
Andrey Gorbunov, CEO of Ihome LLC (a telecommunications operator that is part of the ER-Telecom group of companies), believes that in 2024, due to the current situation, Russian services will grow: "There are prerequisites for replacing Google traffic. This is good news. The content that is made in Russia is growing, the number and quality of services are growing. They are making CDN. They have the right policy to ensure that traffic is delivered to subscribers with high quality. I often come across services that I have never even heard of before. Therefore, traffic will grow, although not in the same volumes as Google." According to Andrey Gorbunov, the number of GGC servers in the ER-Telecom network has already begun to decrease due to their natural wear and tear.
According to ComNews Research, at the beginning of 2022, there were about 700 GGC caching servers operating on the networks of Russian operators, and by the end of 2023 their number will decrease to about 450.
Yaroslav Gorodetsky, CEO of CDN-Video LLC (CDNvideo, a CDN provider in Russia and the CIS controlled by VimpelCom), admits the possibility of a decrease in the quality of YouTube content: "In the near future, the speed of access to Google video content will obviously worsen unless some action is taken. As a result, users will watch YouTube videos in low quality or access to them will be interrupted. Users are unlikely to be happy about this, so some of them will start looking for alternative platforms for consuming content. And if Russian services provide similar content quality and access speed, then it is quite possible that many users will switch to these services. By the way, to ensure access speed, it is not necessary to install caching servers yourself - you can use the services of commercial CDNs, such as our company."
The CEO of JSC "Computer Network Interaction Center "MSK-IX" Evgeny Morozov is confident that the transition to Russian platforms will not occur in all regions: "In the regions of Russia where the quality of content provided in Google services deteriorates, there will be a gradual transition to domestic platforms with their own caching servers. Where the quality of Google services remains unchanged, fair competition will continue between platforms, in which everything will depend on the quality and quantity of content provided."
"Google's CDN for YouTube is called Google Global Cache
