Report from the Mobile World Congress 2021 by Vincent Nalpas, Yves-Marie Poirier, Jean-Paul Chevreux and Océane Lauro
For four days, the world's biggest names in gambling data france mobile telephony gathered in Barcelona for the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2021). On the agenda for this edition, still marked by the global health crisis and therefore hybrid: the emergence of 5G and the new opportunities it will bring , the Cloud once again, new hardware and the connected human .
The (almost) new Eldorado of 5G
It was on everyone's lips, the big favorite of this year and its use cases marked the 4 days of the show and most of the interventions. If it mainly addresses companies and this on many fields of action (industry, robot, drones, AR, VR, 360, smart cities, edge computing ...), the general public uses were not marked by significant announcements.
Among the players who made a splash, Qualcomm , the American company that is a benchmark in the design and marketing of processors for mobile phones , and its brand new Snapdragon 888+ 5G . The promise? "Premium experiences with deeply intelligent entertainment, including games, streaming, photography and much more enhanced by AI, all supported by increased performance, unmatched speed and top-notch connectivity ". A whole program to discover in images:
Another announcement, and not the least, that of Elon Musk . During his highly anticipated keynote, it was as CEO of SpaceX that the American came to talk about Starlink , the high-speed internet service based on a network of satellites in low Earth orbit.
Elon Musk announces that "by August, we should have global connectivity everywhere except the poles ," hinting that the launch is imminent. He presents and sees Starlink as a way to fill the gaps between 5G and fiber for the 3 to 5% of people who need broadband and are in hard-to-reach territories. Musk claims to have surpassed 69,000 active users and estimates that there will be 500,000 within 12 months .
To serve its ambition, Starlink is already in partnership with two major mobile operators (whose names have not yet been disclosed) and is reportedly in discussions with other players in the sector. It must be said that the device is enticing: it only requires a very simple user terminal to install and at an affordable price: $500 at launch, to which is added a subscription of around $100. Thus, Musk's project is on the verge of winning its bet since it could allow ISPs to meet their commitments to provide internet coverage in rural areas.
Furthermore, the launch of the Starship project could take place in the coming months. " We hope to make our first attempt at launching into orbit in the coming months ." Sky is not the limit for Elon!
