The member states of the European Union today signed a joint declaration on how cloud technologies should be better promoted for the economy and the public sector in the EU in the future. The aim is, among other things, to strengthen data sovereignty and to develop uniform rules and standards within the EU for the use of cloud technologies. With their joint declaration, the member states instruct the EU Commission to standardize cloud strategies within the EU.

According to a representative survey by Bitkom Research, three out of four companies in Germany (76 percent) used computing power from the cloud in 2019. Compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation is the most important factor, with almost all users (96 percent) stating this. For 88 percent, a transparent security architecture is a basic requirement, and more than three quarters (77 percent) want to be able to encrypt cloud data . The data storage location is also crucial. For two thirds (65 percent), a cloud provider's data center must be located within the EU's legal territory.
