2014 6a May 10 Camden V UniversityThe Wollongong University Bulls sent out a very clear message that they will be a big part of the IDRU Builders Club Premiership race for 2014 with a tough 24 – 15 win over defending Premiers Camden at Camden Rugby Park on Saturday. In a high paced entertaining 80 minute game, the Bulls put on a powerful forward display which the Rams struggled at times to match. With the Bulls scoring three tries to two it was Uni that took the points in a quality game. Both sides will be weakened in coming weeks by the loss of key players to the Country Cockatoos program. Two such players Paul Tuala from Uni and Gavin Holder from Camden were absolutely outstanding for their sides in this match.
It took 16 minutes for the first points to be scored when Camden phone number library fullback Scott Tarasenko kicked a penalty for the Rams to take the lead. Their lead was short lived when Uni center Ash Mason came up with the ball from the ensuing kick-off and made a long run down the right side of the field. Former Ram, Tyler Aitken loomed up in support on the inside to score. With Donovan Nepia’s conversion, the Bulls were up 7 – 3. Enjoying a penalty advantage Camden took field position in the Uni half and at the 26 minute mark regular try scorer Junior Mapesone was on the end of a long cut out pass from Fly Half Ben Greentree to post the Rams first try. Tarasenko couldn’t convert from wide out but Camden lead 8 – 7. With a couple of minutes left in the first half Bulls winger Matt Lee was pulled down agonizingly short of the line after some slick backline play. Two phases later flanker Wayne Ngatai scored the Bulls second try. A sideline conversion by Nepia brought up the halftime score of 14 – 8 in favor of Uni.
With both Tuala and Holder sparking numerous attacking raids for their respective sides play moved from one end of the field to the other. At the 57 minute mark Tuala made a charge at the Camden line and when tackled a meter short got a miraculous ball away to flanker Jason Hughes to score a converted try next to the posts for a 21 – 8 lead. Ben Greentree got Camden right back in the match when he impersonated a forward to barge over for a five pointer. With the try converted by Tarasenko, Uni’s lead was down to six, 21 – 15 with 10 minutes remaining. Nepia added a penalty goal to give the Bulls some breathing space with just a minute to go.
The Mason brothers, Leon and Ash were a constant threat to the Camden defense but it was the Bulls men up front who laid the foundation for the win. Skipper Gavin Holder was once again Camdens best with center Dane Kelly and stand in halfback Andrew Brown strong.
