Polio was first detected in 1840, but it began to be controlled in 1949, when bacteriologist John Franklin Enders managed to grow the virus in a laboratory inside tissue. After clinical trials proved it was safe, inoculations began in 1954. The Salk vaccine, as it is known, is injectable.

In 1964, another vaccine developed by Albert Bruce Sabin was approved . It was called trivalent because it attacked all three types of viruses mentioned above. Unlike the Salk vaccine, this one was administered orally, so the Sabin vaccine quickly replaced the Salk vaccine.

In a very short time there were massive vaccination campaigns and as a result of all this, on June 21, 2002 , the World Health Organization ( WHO ) declared the European Region free of the polio virus.

Although Salk's vaccine was not the one ultimately adopted to eradicate the disease from the European Region, it took the collaborative and improved work of each scientist to achieve this. Perseverance in developing solutions and the common good were what prevailed in eradicating the disease. And Salk, with his development of the vaccine, allowed others, such as Sabin, to work on improving the solution.
