The search engine Google has reached an agreement with American editors and publishers to launch an electronic library, a project that in Europe is facing reluctance from the community and the sector.

"Google will host the digital books online, and sellers like Amazon or local bookstores will be able to sell access to users on any Internet-connected device they choose," the company said.

However, a possible similar ban in Europe raises the advertising data need for an update of intellectual property legislation, which has been addressed by the Union, which has called on interested parties to analyse the problem.

"If the EU succeeds, it could lay the foundations for a new era of cultural growth in Europe," said Commissioners Viviane Reding and Charlie McCreevy, who did not reveal any specific formula.

In order to push forward negotiations, the search engine sent a letter to European publishers pledging to exclude from its catalogue books with copyrights in the continent, but the sector is reticent with Google, who they accuse of transgressing and then making a deal.
