Gerund or infinitive, that is the question. Today we are going to resolve one of the most common doubts in English and review the uses of the gerund. There is sure to be one you didn't know about!
How the gerund is formed
To begin, let's see how the gerund is formed.
The basic rule is clear: we take the verb without to and add -ing. Apart from this, you only have to remember a handful of peculiarities:
In some cases, the final consonant of a verb is doubled, e.g. in greece phone number list or swimming . For this to happen, several conditions must be met: the verb is monosyllabic or has an accent on the last syllable and ends in a single consonant preceded by a single vowel. This also occurs in verbs ending in l.
In verbs ending in -ie, we remove these two letters and replace them with a y. For example: dying , lying …
For verbs ending in -e, we remove this letter before adding -ing: causing, making . The only exception is the verb to be (its gerund is being , not "bing").
To use the negative form of the gerund, we simply add "not" before the verb. Examples : Not doing exercise is bad for your health. I miss not having to drive to work early every morning.
