Clubs have faced a multiple reduction in commercial revenue, which is more than 80% made up of sponsorship income. Unlike traditional sports clubs, which can always count on funds from the sale of rights to broadcast games, eSports organizations do not receive revenue from eSports broadcasts, and therefore are almost entirely dependent on sponsorship income.

As a result of massive cuts in marketing budgets in 2022-2023, many esports organizations announced staff reductions or even closures . The highest bar for esports clubs has become not profitability and exponential revenue growth (no one expected that anymore), but existence at a break-even level, which only a few clubs have managed to achieve.

For some clubs playing in the most popular disciplines in Russia, Dota 2 and Counter-Strike, bookmaker sponsorship contracts generate 70-100% of the teams' commercial revenue. In other popular disciplines, such as League of Legends or Valorant, contracts with bookmakers are prohibited.

Even clubs from Europe, where betting is a highly regulated industry, have begun to rely on the support of domestic bookmakers. In 2023, the European eSports club Gaimin Gladiators, which won silver at the Dota 2 World Championship, announced sponsorship from the Russian bookmaker Winline. The German team GamerLegion followed in their footsteps, entering into a partnership with Fonbet.
